Boston Pops 125th Anniversary Banner at PredentialIt is not hard to believe that the Boston Pops have been around 125 years.  Whether you are a Bostonian or not you have been exposed to the Boston Pops in some way.  It is hard to escape the popularity of the Boston Pops concert on July 4th.  What is July 4th without their rendition of Stars and Stripes Forever?

This year the Boston Pops is celebrating its 125th anniversary.  At their website you can see a neat history of the Boston Pops including major events from the 1800’s to the present.  I have lived in the Boston area all my life and I was not aware of how the Boston Pops evolved to the world renowned orchestra it is today.  Though many of us think of the Boston Pops as having been first conducted by Arther Fiedler there were actually quite a few conductors in the 45 years preceding him.  Though he was actually the first American-born musician to hold the position.  Even if you are too young to remember Arthur Fiedler you can see him on the Charles River.  The statue of his face is actually stop worthy if you are biking or running past as many people do on the Charles.  He even has a footbridge named after him to cross Storrow Drive from the city to the Charles River Park side.

The Boston Pops is celebrating its anniversary with a variety of performances from May 4th to June 20th.  John Williams who is conductor laureate is putting on Hooray for Hollywood performances through tomorrow Friday May 14th.  John William followed Fiedler and then passed the baton to Keith Lockhart.  Besides the Hurray for Hollywood performance one of the other performances that jump out at me is the one taking place next Tuesday.  It is called Stars and Stripes:  American Heroes and will feature Robert Deniro, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.  They will be performing for the first time The Dream Lives On:  A Portrait of the Kennedy Brothers which is the centerpiece of the Anniversary Season.  The performance will be taking place next Tuesday May 18th at Symphony Hall and tickets are still available.

For more information on the 125th Anniversary Season Celebration and tickets check out the Boston Pops Website.  Here is the Stars and Stripes Performance by the Boston Pops on July 4th 2009.
