Buying in bulk is certainly not a new trend. Stores like BJ’s Wholesale Club and Costco are built on the mentality that if you store up your goods like a practical little squirrel, you will get a discount over buying one at a time. And the concept is wonderful if you aren’t living paycheck to paycheck in a studio apartment the size of a postage stamp.

turtle-basketNow, imagine buying your sweets and candy in bulk. Outside of Halloween in a neighborhood stocked with kids, this sounds like a dangerous, albeit tempting, idea. Well, along comes the idea of bulk buying power without the burden being on just little old you to put the bulk in buying (from your wallet or onto your waist).

The new purchasing power in economically fickle times is online group buying. Collectively ante up with strangers for your chance at some seriously deep discounts. These group buying sites are suddenly popping up everywhere including sites for buying on e-commerce sites to collective buying power for new parents. But the two heard talked about most on the streets of Boston are GroupOn and BuyWithMe.com.

Nearly any need, practical or whimsical, can be indulged with daily specials on both sites that include deep discounts to spas, health clubs, restaurants, daytrips, hotels, dry cleaning and nearly other personal expenditure you can think of in the city. And businesses are lining up to take advantage of this opportunity to get in front of consumers still looking to spend. What makes it so appealing to these businesses? Bulk! Each business sets a minimum number of participants and a time frame. If the number of sign ups does not exceed the minimum before the offer is taken off the table, no one is able to receive the special discount. When it works the businesses gets an influx of guaranteed business – a gift to be sure in these troubles times.

  1. What a concept! For years, I’ve belonged to a food co-op, where we did the same thing, but alas, it was with healthy food. Is there a Buy With Me group willing to go in a truck load of Krispy Kremes? Great Article! Good info on new trends!
