Boston Crime Drama Rizzoli & Isles – A Surprise Hit

Some of you may be missing the surprise cable hit of the summer.  Rizzoli & Isles is wrapping up it’s first season on TNT this coming Monday.  The series is based on the “team” of Boston detective Jane Rizzoli and a Boston Medical Examiner Maura Isles.  I stumbled onto the show because I am a fan of The Closer and this new show airs right after that at 10pm on Mondays.  I am not sure if I would have made it a point of watching the show if it hadn’t been for that.

As a fan of Boston(of course) it is always neat to see shows and movies that are supposed to be based in the Boston area.  We have been meaning to write about Rizzoli & Isles for a while since you get a chance to see Boston in some scenes though the series is not filmed here.  They use shots of the Boston area as transitions to other parts of the show to give it a feel that it is actually in Boston.  Though I appreciate those shots I do agree the Phoenix post that they should film at least some shows here.  We do have “film industry” here.

If you are from the Boston area you may take issue to some inaccuracies but overall I found most of the stuff amusing.  Not everyone has a Boston accent.  I was born and raised in the South End of Boston and have been told many times that I don’t have an accent.  Though my husband who was raised in Watertown Massachusetts does.

Taking the whole Boston thing out of the equation I still like the show enough to keep watching it and look forward to watching the next season.  Crime Dramas can be hit or miss since there are so many kinds out there.  Many shows highlight the medical and evidential science behind solving crimes.  Isles reminds me of the character Dr. Temperance Brennan in Bones.  Both Bones and Rizzoli & Isles seem to focus more on character development than the Law and Order and CSI shows that have dominated the drama category.  I believe that is why this new show has attracted a following.  I am not sure I would be a fan of Law and Order Boston or CSI Boston.

The author behind Rizzoli & Isles also has a New England connection.  Tess Gerritsen lives in Camden, Maine.  Her medical background as a physician is what makes the medical science behind her medical thrillers natural.  Apparently Dr. Maura Isles is supposed to be kind of like Tess herself.  Similar to many crime authors there is a need to understand the why behind crimes and criminals.

Though some of the details may not be perfect about Boston I highly recommend watching Rizzoli & Isles.  You can catch old episodes on TNT and TNT on Demand. The Season Finale as mentioned before is this Monday.

At the very least you have to like the DropKick Murphys I’m Shipping Up to Boston as the intro song for the show…
