According to the FBI, Boston’s police should be walking the city’s streets armed with semi-automatic assault rifles.

Warren Bamford, the FBI head in Boston, says that in order for the city to be properly prepared for a possible future terrorist attack, its police force should be  carrying the military-grade weaponry.

Back in May, there was a proposal to arm around 200 members of Boston’s police force with M-16s ordered from the U.S. military, but it was lambasted by Boston Mayor Tom Menino, who said that the semiautomatic weaponry only belongs in the hands of specially trained individuals.

The FBI’s Bamford says he is baffled by the opposition, and cited a terrorist attack that killed 166 people in Mumbai, India last November as a good example of why the assault rifles would help.

Mumbai, India? What about  nearby NYC and 9/11? Perhaps Bamford avoided using that terrorist attack as an example because when planes fly into your city buildings, not even bazookas–let alone assault rifles–can do much to help.
