Boston Marches Into Madness

Agganis Statue Boston UniversityLast weekend my family and I were lucky enough to attend 2 of the 3 big sporting events over at Boston University.  It is rare to have 3 teams contending for spots in the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, Women’s NCAA Basketball Tournament and the Women’s NCAA Ice Hockey Championship.

Though we were not able to attend the Men’s game we did follow it on Twitter.  We missed an amazing game by John Holland who won it in the last seconds with a couple of free throws.  The team deserved a big celebration and the fans were outside of Agganis Arena thrilled at their team getting into the tournament.  The BU Men’s Basketball team is set to play Kansas tonight and the odds are definitely stacked against them but after attending the 2 other games that day I have to say that anything is possible.  The way things have been going for our President Obama lately his picking Kansas may be a blessing 😉 .  The game is this evening starting at 6:50pm and can be viewed on TBS.  BU has even put together some watch party locations across the country.  The one in Boston is going to be at the White Horse Tavern in Brighton.

The Boston area had other teams in the mix for a possible birth in the NCAA Basketball tournament.  Both Boston College and Harvard sadly missed their chances.  That would have made for a tremendous showing for Boston had they been able to pull it off.

Thankfully though the story of March madness also includes the women’s teams.  Though BU lost their chance against Hartford in the game that we watched they had a good season with many of their starters coming back next year.  Mo Moran in particular had a great game but sadly some of the other players basically went cold with a poor showing in offense.

Though I have left women’s hockey for last it is by no means because it was less impressive.  We did get a chance to watch this game and it was truly exciting.  At one point Wakefield scored a goal that was worthy of a replay reel as she scored a goal with both her feet in the air.  My kids greatly enjoyed the game where we were also treated with appearances by Mike Eruzione of Miracle on Ice fame and Coach Jack Parker (who’s teams sadly will not be playing on this year).  The BU Women’s hockey team defeated MercyHurst and will be playing Cornell tonight (can be viewed online if you can’t find it on TV).  If they win they may end up playing Boston College who also had an impressive season and is representing Boston as well in the Women’s Frozen Four.  The championship could end up being BC against BU!

Enjoy the madness!
