Brookline's Conan moves to TBS

Brookline’s Conan O’Brien didn’t waste any time finding a new network.  Based on his agreement with NBC he would not be able to have a show until at least September and it looks like the new show on TBS is set to start in November.

The drama with NBC was of particular interest here in Massachusetts because Jay Leno and Conan are from Andover and Brookline.  What are the odds of 2 Massachusetts comedians competing so closely in the late night arena?  Anyhow…

Many people assumed Conan would go to Fox, another non-cable publicly accessible network.  Instead he is going to TBS which is part of the basic cable packages available to most. I am not sure about the income level of his fans but I think most people have some form of cable nowadays.  The question is will fans make a conscious choice to follow Conan over to TBS or not.  Conan’s audience which is said to be made up of the the coveted younger males demographic would strike me as one that would follow him.  Conan’s comedy is unique and I have to say quirky.  Either you like it or you don’t.

Late night television is also a niche all to itself.  As the audience for the main stream networks has splintered into the niche networks available on cable, the networks have lost the formerly captive audiences.  I think Conan will more than hold his own.

I think it was pretty classy of Conan to make sure George Lopez was OK with the discussions about Conan coming over to TBS.  NBC’s mismanagement of their late night personalities cost them millions.  People skills count.  I will say I thought moving Jay Leno to 10pm was doomed to fail.  There is a reason why those shows are on late at night.

Conan is traveling the country on his comedy tour which is set to come to Boston’s Wang Center/Citi Performing Arts Center in June on the 4th and the 5th.  The show is appropriately titled “The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour.”  You can also catch George Lopez at the Wang Center next Friday April 30th.  Tickets can be found at the Citi Performing Arts Center website.
