Free Friday Flicks at Boston’s Hatch Shell

boston_free_friday_flicksFree outdoor movie screenings are one of my favorite parts of summer in Boston. Even if I’ve already seen the movie, there’s something magical about watching it under the stars on a blanket. Two places in particular offer ample opportunities for free, family-friendly fun with evening movie showings al fresco.

The first is Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell. This one tends to attract lots of families and groups of friends, because a lot of the movies are Disney or Pixar cartoons. Get there early and pack a picnic to secure the best possible viewing spot. Blankets, towels, and sheets are welcome so that you can spread out or cuddle with your SO. It can get chilly after dark, so be sure to dress in layers. Movies are shown at sundown.

Here’s the schedule for Free Friday Flicks 2009:

June 19: The Tale of Despereaux
July 10: Kung Fu Panda
July 17:  Get Smart
July 24: Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
July 31:  Mama Mia!
August 7:  Star Wars: The Clone Wars
August 14:  Inkheart
August 21: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
August 28:  Iron Man

Another option that tends to attract more grownups is Movies by Moonlight at the Boston Harbor Hotel. To get the best seats, consider making a dinner reservation at the hotel’s Rowes Wharf Sea Grille (formerly Intrigue Cafe) and lingering for the movie. Otherwise, space is rather limited and you’ll probably be sitting on a concrete step sandwiched between several other people. However, the hotel is set right on Rowes Wharf, so in addition to the movie, you’ll also get beautiful views of the Boston harbor in the background. These movies are shown at sunset, but you’ll want to arrive early to grab a good seat.

Here’s the schedule for Movies by Moonlight 2009:

June 19, The Out Of Towners
June 26, Mildred Pierce
July 3, Dark Victory
July 10, No Movie Scheduled / Sail Boston Event
July 17, The Long, Long Trailer
July 24, A League Of Their Own
July 31, Same Time, Next Year
August 7, The Snows Of Kilimanjaro
August 14, The Champ
August 21, Some Like It Hot
August 22, The Apartment
August 28, The China Syndrome
September 4, The Inn Of The 6th Happiness

Tell us! Have you been to either of these events? What did you think? Or are you planning to check it out this summer? Leave a comment and let us know!
