The summer shopping conundrum.  You need some new gear, home decor or just feel to shop because, dammit, you deserve it.  But the good weather seems like such a precious commodity around here these days, who wants to spend the day in the mall?  And really… who wants the canned merchandise available at the mall…?  The solution?  A weekly outdoor artisan market in the heart of Boston’s hippest district!

SOWA Open Market

SOWA Open Market

The Sowa Open Market, now in its 6th season is open every Sunday mid-May through October 25th and this Sunday is set to be one of the biggest events of the season. Over 90 vendors are expected this Sunday, August 9th from 10am to 4pm with free admission and parking at 540 Harrison Avenue. You’d just be plain silly to miss it all.

What can you expect to find? Artists in many mediums from glass to paint to mosaic and mixed mediums and beyond;  Musicians, photographers, craft makers, as well as fashion, jewelry accessories designers. Then there is the complete pavilion of antique dealers in the historic trolley barn at the back of the parking lot.  And, in case you get hungry from all that ravenous shopping, there is a Farmers Market for fresh fruits and baked goods as you stroll from tent to tent on a <hopefully> sunny day!

Plus 20 artists and designers will be making the trip from the Gotham marketplace in New York City to sell their homemade goods at the Sowa Market this weekend only.

And, you never know who you might encounter at the SOWA Open Market.  According to SOWA’s Twitter page, John Krasinski, a.k.a.  Jim of NBC’s “The Office” fame and his girlfriend Emily Blunt from the movie “The Devil Wear Prada” shopped the market back on June 28th. With so many movies being shot in and around Boston this summer, the chances for a brush with stardom is pretty high!
